REVIEW OF THE INVESTIGATIONS ON THE AUSTRIAN PINE (PINUS NIGRA
ARN.) AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HITHERTO ACHIEVED RESULTS

SUMMARY

The author discusses the achievements of botanical studies into the Austrian
Pine species and gives a survey of its habitats in the world according to Delvoy.
Thereafter he reviews the investigations performed in Yugoslavia in this field. He
presents a concise review of these works and an outline map of distribution of the
Austrian Pine species on the Balcans according to Dr. P. Fukarek. Then he discusses
the geological substratum on which there occurs the Austrian Pine in Yugoslavia,
as well as the Karst soil types on which thrives this tree species. He describes
the conditions necessary for its growing as well as the role of Juniperus sp. in its
spreading. He discusses its röle in the reforestation of degraded Karst areas as well
as the causes of frequent failures. The author classifies the failures into three groups,
viz. climatic, mechanical and biological. In the climatic group the author discusses
the question of the drought and its combating by agrotehnical measures. In the
mechanical group he passes in review the errors when handling the seedlings as
well as the errors during the afforestation. With the biological group he discusses
the origin of seeds as well as the failures to be ascribed to the provenances of the
Austrian Pine. In conclusion the author emphasizes the inmportance of the autochthonous
habitats of the Austrian Pine to be used as seed sources.
