ON NORDMANN SILVER FIR (ABIES NORĐMANNIANA SPACH) — ITS PROPERTIES OF THE SPECIES, POSSIBILITIES OF AND NEEDS FOR ITS EXPANSION IN YUGOSLAVIA SUMMARY The study on Nordmann Fir is a small monograph in which the author gave in a condensed form — based on an authentic documentation — a suvey about the natural habitat of this species in the Caucasia, as well as on the possibilities of its propagation in Yugoslavia. In the bagiruniing of his study — in the introductory part — the author reports on the need to increase the propagation cultivation of fast-growing coniferous species in Yugoslavia, and to select coniferous species for this purpose, including Nordmann Fir, too. Thereafter, the study discusses the area of distribution of Nordmann Silver Fir, as well as its morphological, biological and technological properties and its characters in relation to European Silver Fir. Further on, the study gives a survey of its successful cultivation on the experimental plots in France, England and Germany as recorded in the professional literature of these countries. As regards the chances for an artificial cultivation of Nordmann Fir in Yugoslavia, the author has carried out extended investigations, i. e. the reconnaissance works and biometric measurements of cultures of this Fir ´Species existing on the territories of all Yugoslav Republic, where it occurs al´lochthoinously, preparing besides also photo records. On giving a survey of the ecological factors under which Nordmann Fir thrives in Caucasia and Yugoslavia, and on comparing these factors mutually, the aiuthor draws the following conclusions: Nordmann Silver Fir can be propagated in Yugoslavia in parks, by intensive cultures, and on plantations. It can be cultivated throughout the Yugoslavia in areas having the similar sites as the environs of Varaždin in Croatia, the park at Vrnjaöka Banja and the park »Karagač« near Peć in Serbia, Bitolia, Oteševo and Ohrid in Macedonia. Such and similar sites are to be found also in Slovenia and in Bosnia and Hercegovina. These are the sites of the submontane Beech (Fagetum montanum). as well as the sites of Sessile Oak (Quercetum carpinetum et Querce´;ai montanum), as well as the sites of Sessile Oak (Querceto-carpinetum et Quercetum with developed relief. On the Oak sites with developed relief for the Nordmann Fir are suitable localities having cold aspects, i. e. the slopes towards the North, Ncrth-West, and North-East. Nordmann Fir can also thrive in flat lands if it is planted under a moderate shelter of other forest tree species, as is the case in all our parks. Besides its high horticultural value, this Fir species should be propagated in the first place for its relatively quick growing and producing a high-quality wood especially for pulp and aircraft industries. The biological-technological process of cultivation of Nordmann Fir does not differ at all from such techniques of growing other coniferous species. That means that we can plant this Fir species in parks, in thinly-stocked broadleaved stands to be enriched, as well as in industrial plantations in mixture with other tree species already advanced in growth and giving the necessary shelter. On sowing Nordmann.Fir germinates rnd sprouts in an excellent manner and more vigorously than European Fir, and there does not occur any difficulty in rearing planting stock from the indigenous or imported seed. |
