EFFECT OF SOIL FERTILITY ON THE GROWTH OF NORWAY SPRUCE
IN THE CULTURE »VRELO« AT JASTREBARSKO

Summary

Investigated was an (8 + 3)-year-old planting of Norway Spruce in the grounds
of the Yugoslav Institute for Conifers at Jastrebarsko near Zagreb. The culture was
established on a brown illimerized soil on Triassic layers of calcareous dolomite, and
it is situated within the area of the forest association Fagetum croaticum montanum
Horv. It lies on a gentle slope of undulated ground, at an altitude of 500—550 m. with
a south-facing aspect.

About 40 years ago part of the area of culture was used for charcoal burning.
In the soil of this part of area to a depth of 60 cm. 12 t./ha. of the total N, 144 kg./ha.
of available PaOs and 454 kg./ha. of available K2O (Al-method were established. With
this nutrient content in the soil the one-year-old needles of Norway Spruce contained
1.52»/o N, 0.53% P2O.-,, 0.72P/oKüO and 0.7Ö%> CaO. On the basis of these data the authors
conclude that the investigated culture is well supplied with the chief nutritive substances.
Under the existing circumstances the culture produced 16 t./ha. of absolute
dry matter and achieved an average height of 2.8 m. It was found that under most
favourable thriving this Norway Spruce culture contains per ha.: 89.5 kg. N, 35.3 kg.
P2O5, 47.7 kg. K2O and 122.4 kg. CaO.

An analysis of the hitherto achieved development of the culture in question
indicates that on the investigated and similar sites Norway Spruce can grow well,
and that by applying adequate agrotechnical measures it is possible to considerably
influence the augmentation of increment.
