ABOUT THE COLD RESISTANCE OF DOUGLAS FIR (Pseudotsuga taxifolia var. viridis Asch, et Gr.) IN KOSMET Summary In the introduction is presented a historical review of the initial expansion of Douglas Fir in Europe. Further are mentioned its principal habitats and cultivations in Yugoslavia especially in Croatia .Slovenia and Serbia, as far back as before the First World War. In detail is described the occurrence and propagation of Douglas Fir in the province of Kosovo and Metohija, where it appeared anly after World War II. A detailed account is given of the harmful effect of the extremely cold winter of 1963/1964 on Douglas Fir, i.e. the total winter-killing of young 1—3-year-old plants. In conclusion, further mass propagation of this valuable species in the area of Kosovo and Metohija is recommended. And, finally, on the basis of his observations, the author state that during the severe, snowless winter of 1963/1964 only young plants suffered and that in sites where they were not protected by adequate means (shields, brush shades, hay mulch, straw or saw dust, tree lanes in- nursery, etc.). The winter-killing of young Douglas Fir plants was not caused through the dangerouf effect of frost on to the overground plant parts (stems and crowns), but to che underground parts, i.e. the root system which was killed owing to deep-freezing of the soil. |
