APPLICATION OF RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES IN SILVICULTURE Summary Application of radioactive isotopes in silvicultural experiments and especially in experimental ecology represents a method by means of which we obtain exact results rapidly. The author believes that experiments with radioactive isotopes ought to be focused on the following: 1. Inwestigation on the respouse of individual varieties of forest tree species to the adding of radioactive biogenic elements to the soil, their effect on the assimilatory ared and the respouse when added directly to the conducting elements of the stem. Such investigations are of interest to the silvicultural technique, which for the purpose of increasing the yield uses mineral fertilizers. As this country´s forest and other soils lack mainly in phosphorus, there would come into consideration primarily the application of the radioactive isotope of phosphorus (P32) which is added in the form of superphosphate or other phosphatic fertilizer. 2. Investigation on the biochemical influence among individual varieties of forest tree species having in view primarily the inhibitors of physiological processes which in their structure contain chemical elements whose existing radioactive isotopes are suitable for biological experiments. 3. Investigation into the natural root-grafting of neighbouring stems oT forest tree species by applying a suitabla radioactive isotope to the conducting tissues of the tree. 4. Establishing the affinity of individual members of a biocenosis to main varieties of forest tree species by applying pairs of radioactive isotopes. 5. Establishing the movement of carbon dioxide within the relation atmosphere — forest tree and soil — atmosphere — forest tree by applying radioactive carbon dioxide (C14). The experiments mentioned under 2—5 are of special value in understanding the forest ecosystem and the competition among forest tree species as well as the interrelationships of individual members of a biocoenosis. At the end is given an account of some foreign and the author´s own investigations, in which radioactive isotopes were used. |
