QUALITY OF FOOD AS ONE OF THE CAUSES OF MASS OUTBREAKS OF PYGAERA ANASTOMOSIS L. IN EUROAMERICAN POPLAR PLANTATIONS Summary Pygaera anastomosis L. (Notodontidae, Lepidoptera) is an insect pest on Poplars and Willows. In this country it produces 3 and partially 4 generations in a year, so that the larvae damage threes from the early spring until the late autumn. As a new and dangerous pest it appeared in Yugoslavia and in some other European countries (Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Italy) only after the Second World War when an intensive cultivation of Euroamerican Poplars on large surfaces started. In some cases of its overpopulations in Poplar plantations chemical control had to be undertaken. The objective of the present invastigations was to examine the effect of food quality on the development of Pygaera anastomosis L., for better knowledge of causes of mass outbreaks of this insect pest in Euroamerican Poplar plantations. In the laboratory experiments the larvae were fed on the foliage of the following Poplars: Populus euroamericana cv. regenerata, P. nigra v. italica, P. tremula and P, alba. The experiments lasted nearly two years and during this time 7 generations in total were bred, which means, one complete annual life cycle and three generations in addition. For each kind of food the following elements were determined: number and duration of individual larval instars, as well as the total duration of the larval stage, mortality of larvae and pupae, fecundity of females, sex ratio and reproductive potential. In addition, the effect of food on the diapause of larvae was examined. |
