Summary

PROPERTIES OF SOILS UNDER BLACK ALDER FORESTS
IN THE SAVA AND KUPA RIVER VALLEYS

Investigations were carried out of the soils under typically developed associations
of black alder forests.

Through pedological field investigations the natural environment conditions
were studied, as well as the soil morphogenesis in the areas of black alder forests
in the Sava and Kupa Valleys. Physical and chemical analyses of soil samples
were made by up-toiate methods of laboratory investigation.

The investigation showed that the black alder forest associations developed
in the areas of hydromorphic soils in the Sava and Kupa Valleys. In the forest
areas of the Sava Valley, in the Spačva forest region, the associations of black
alder forests, that is the black alder forest with alder buckthorn (Frangulo-Alnetum
glutinosae typicum Rauš 71) and the black alder forest with alder buckthorn,
spreading elm and narrow-leaved ash (Frangulo-Alnetum glutinosae ulmetosum
laevis Rauš 71), are developed on organogenic hydromorphic soils of distinct
repressions, on mineral hydromorphic gley soils of plains and wet shelves, and
on the plain sails which are characterised by transitory properties between mineral
organogenic and organogenic hydromorphic soils. In some parts of Spačva
there are depressions of mineral organogenic hydromorphic gley soils where
Glyceria maxima is found (Frangulo-Alnetum glutinosae Rauš 68 fades Glyceria
maxima).

In the upper Sava Valley, in the Žutica forest, the association of black alder
forest with alder buckthorn (Frangulo-Alnetum glutinosae typicum Rauš 71) grows
in the plains on mineral hydromorphic gley soils. On higher positions, on whic
the moderately gleyed variety of these soils develops, black alder recedes gradually
and pedunculate oak gains ground.

The hydromorphic soils in the Kupa Valley are very important for the development
of the forest association of black alder and elongated sedge (Carici
elongatae-Alnetum glutinosae W. Koch 26), particularly in the regions of Prekblatnica
and Okićki lug. This assoviation is developed on mineral organogenic hydromorphic
gley soils, on which, in porous plains, the subassociations Iris pseudacorus
Glav. 60 and Polygonum hydropiper Glav. 60 were recorded among others.

In the area of mineral organogenic hydromorphic gley soils in the Kupa
Valley forests black alder is also found in the coenosis of narrow-leaved ach and
leucojum (Leucoio-Fraxinetum angustifoliae alnetosum glutinosae Glav. 63).
