SUMMARY

STATE OF THE ROAD NETWORKS IN THE SOCIALLY-OWNED FORESTS
OF THE FSR OF YUGOSLAVIA

The total length of all permanent roads — forest and public ones — in the
socially-owned forests of Yugoslavia (in the SR Slovenia also including the roads
in privately-owned forests) amounts to 52.084 km.

Density of the permanent roads (forest and public ones), as per the 31st
December 1974, amounted for the whole of Yugoslavia to an average of 8.3 m
per ha of wooded area.

The highest road network density is in the SR of Slovenia (15.4 m/ha), in the
SR of Serbia in the socially-owned forests it is on the average level of the country

(8.5 m/ha), while in the other Republics it is fairly balanced and below the Yugoslav
average.
Dependence of the road network density on the type of forest is very marked.
The highest road density is actualized in high forests amounting on an
average to 11.6 m/ha, while with the increasing share of coppice forests in the
total wooded area the road density per unit area of forests decreases. Thus, in
the regions with ashare of coppice forests over 60 % in the total wooded area,
the average road network density amounts to 5.7 m/ha in all.

Considering the structure of the areas of socially-owned forests according to
the classes of road density, it is visible that in 20 % of forests of the totally inventoried
forest area (6 million ha) is actualized the necessary road density making
a normal management of forests possible; in 50 % of areas the realized road
density satisfies the accomplishment of one half of the needs; in 27 % of areas
the possibilities for management are reduced to the most necessary interventions,
while in 7 % of forest areas all economic activity is virtually rendered impossible.
