SUMMARY SOME MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HYBRIDS BETWEEN JAPANESE RED PINE (PINUS DENSIFLORA SIEB. ET ZUCC.) AND SCOTS PINE (PINUS SYLVESTRIS L.) On a clone (VI16) of Japanese Red Pine a controlled hybridisation with pollen from a tree of Scots Pine was performed in 1965. From this crossing combination three plants were raised in 1967. At their age of 7 years several morphological characteristics and the anatomical structure of the needles were observed, with the aim to establish in which characters the hybrids differ from their parents. The hybrid plants blossomed already in the third year. At the age of 7 years they bore 2—3 cones in the whorl, while the Scots Pine had not yet blossomed at that age. The parent clone of Japanese Red Pine bore on an average a greater number of cones in the whorl. The hybrid character of the raised plants is best manifested by the structure of the cones, by the insertion angle, the length of the cone stalk and the colour of one-year-old shoots. With regard to the angle of insertion of the cones and the length of the cone stalks the hybrids are intermediate, while with respect to the colour of one-year shoots they resemble Scots Pine to a greater extent. Cone apophyses of hybrid plants possess strongly marked umbos, and in this regard they resemble Japanese Red Pine. The prickles on the appophyses in hybrid plants are strongly marked only in the upper half of the cone, while in Japanese Red Pine sharp prickles are distributed all over the cone. The cone of Scots Pine bears no prickles on the apophyses. As regards the length of the needles and the length of the basal sheath on the needles the hybrids resemble Scots Pine more than Japanese Red Pine. As to the anatomical structure of the needles there exist differences in the mutual position of the vascular bundles in the pericycle. In Scots Pine the vascular bundles are more strongly placed apart than in Japanese Red Pine, while the hybrids display an intermediacy in this respects. Primljeno 8. IX 1977.
