SUMMARY Forest ecosystems of the island of Rab (from the 15th to the 20th centuries) In times past the forests and sea of the island of Rab represented the most important natural sources from which the people obtained the goods for their subsistance. Therefore, it is not surprising that as early as tie 15th century (and even earlier), we find written documents on the forests of the island of Rab. In the Cronicle of the Franciscan monastery Kambor at Rab, written by the Abbot Odorik Badurina from 1936 to 1956, we find written documents about the appearance, devastation and re-establishment of forests on the island od Rab. In addition to that the forests of the island of Rab have been described and investigated in recent times by the following authors: D. LASMAN 1906, D. HIRC 1913, St. SURIĆ 1933, A. PETRAĆIĆ 1938, St. HORVATIĆ 1939, J. ŠAFAR 1962, D. RAUS-S. MATIC-A. VRANKOVIĆ 1974, and others. On the basis of the mentioned works and the author´s own investigations a survey of the causes for the regression of the ecosystems of the island of Rab has been dealt, with.
