Judging by its structure it is a lowland forest (Auenwald) in the riiver Mirna
valley with prevailing of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) and field ash (Fraxinus
angustifolia Vahl.). Other species are also represented such as black alder
(Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.), poplars (Populus alba and P. nigra L.) along white
willow (Salix alba L.) and other. Common elm (Ulmus carpinifolia Gleditch) has
been attacked by Dutch desease (Ceratocystis ulmi) and is less represented in
this forest.

Due to a premature decision the area covered by the forest has beeni planned
for agricultural production. The realization of this plan would mean great damage,
according to the author. The annihilation of this unique forest eco-system
in the Mediterranean region would be unforgivable mistake. The auther suggests
that compartment 1 of this forest becomes park woods, compartments 2—5 a
special reservation of forest vegetation and compartments 6—18 special purpose
forest intended to increase its social and protective function. The Motovun wood
has been violated by the construction work on a new road and river Mirna new
bed, by conversion of the natural into the poplar forest, and by cuting to provide
space for agricultural purposes. It is necessary to make amends for this wherever
possible so that the Motovun forest can return to its original state. In this pa-
par one assertion is questioned, i.e. that biotope of the Motovun forest (has been
changed and that no conditions for a successful existence of this eco-system
exist.
