The Terms »Krš« and »Kras« in Croatian Science S u m m a r y In the Croatian language two terms are used when refering to chalk formation with funel-shaped depressions (Karst), and these are »Kras« and »Krš«. In this paper the author slates that in current Croaüan scientific literature three possibilities exist for meaningful use of the terms »krš" and »kras«: 1. »Krš« and »kras«, each has its own meaning; »krš« has morphological-pedological- vegetational meaning, while »kras« has a corrosional, co called karst-erosional meaning. 2. »Krš« and »kras« are synonyms, i.e. both therms can be used for both meanings mentioned in 1. 3. »Kras« is a homonym, a term with two meanings: a) »krš« in the wider sense of the word with a morphological-pedological-vegetational meaning, and b) »krš« in the narrower sense of the word representing corrosional, i.e. karst-erosional meaning. The author of the paper shows that all scientific and linguistic arguments, as well as hundred years of tradition, tend to use the term »krš« lor the morphological- pedological-vegetalional meaning, and »kras« for the corrosional, i.e. karst- erosional meaning. Such an approach is in the interest of Croatian, and Yugoslav, science 418 |
