Fructification and Subspontaneous Reproduction of Exotic Woody Plants in the Arboretum of Botanical Garden — Faculty of Science Zagreb Summary The Botanic Garden of the University in Zagreb covers an area of about 4.7 ha., and was established in 1889., at the same place where it is also today. Lately, the collections of the Botanic Garden are cultivated over 10 000 different species. The largest part of the garden is used for Arboretum (number of species: cca 1000). Trees and bushes are arranged in free groups, and are systemized to the philogenetic-systematic relationship. The geographical location and coordinates for Arboretum: 15° 59´ long. East. 45° 48´ latt. North Altitude: 115 m above sea level Ground conditions: Zagreb is situated on sediments of Holocene (Alluvium), Pleistocene (Dilluvium) and partly Pliocene. Climatic data: 10.6° C — average yeariy temperature 40.4° C — absolute max. —27.3° C — absolute min.; Rainfall — mean annual: 871 mm. Habitat: Carpino betuli — Quercetum roboris Jov. The work diagramicaitly shows the 137 dendrological species (Gymnospermae — 22 sp., Angiospermae — 115 sp) which are alhotonic for the habitat on which the Arboretum is located. The mostly of the listed exotic woody plants (75 sp.) reproduce subspontaneously generalivelly and give seedlings of good vitality. The majority of the observed species is very interesting for studies of the succession of the urban environment vegetation and cultural landscape. 334 |
