Narrow-Leaved Ash Salt Tolerance and the Possibility of Its-Application in Forest Planting on Saline Soils Summary The paper deals with the effect of the chemism of soil salinity to the development of narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Wahl.) in the conditions of naturally saline soils in Vojvodina. The research has been carried out to establish the relations of this species to salts, and the possibility of ith use in forest~plantings in the above specific contitions. It has been based on the analyses of narrow-leaved ash growth on sample plots established on soils of different types and degrees of salinity. The results point out that narrow-leaved ash can thrive and develop in the conditions of soda-sulphate and chloride — sulphate types of soil salinity, which are characterized by the following contents and relations of toxic ions: — soda — sulphate type: 0,212 — 0,343«Va toxic ions — up to 0,122»/o HCO,´- ions 0,028B/c», Cl´-ions and 0,115V« S04"-ions; — chloride — sulphate type: 0,161 — 0,43T>/0 toxic ions — up to 0,049?´/<> HC03´-ions, 0,03% Cl´-ions and 0,268!Vo SO,,"-ions. The resulting dependences for height ancrement (Y), and the dipth of the basic mass of root system development (X:) and the sum of toxic ions (X2) in the layer, show the high degree of interrelationship. Based on the results of the investigation, narrow-leaved ash can be classified into the group of trees tolerant to soil salinity. As for the forest plantings, in the condition of saline soils, narrow-leaved ash represents the significant tree species, although the dimensions of average trees are essentially different from those achieved on optimal sites. Such plantings are not characterized by high production of commercial timber, but, first of all, by the beneficial effect to the processes in the soil and also by their other multi-purpose functions. |
