Care of Youngs compositions of Pine by Thinning

Summary

Investigations of the influence of thinning on the development of compositions
and on the reduction of damage caused by wet snow were carried out
in young compositions of Scotch pine (series A) and Scotch pine and black pine
(Series B). In series A, thinning was started when the constituents were 23 years
old and repeated every five years, while in series B, thinning was started when
the compositions were 12 years old and repeated every three years. The development
of the compositions was observed over a period of 21 (23—44) and 20
(12—32) years, respectively. The data which have been gathered indicate that
thinning has a positive influence on the growth of the trees in thickness and
on timber production, as well as on the reduction of damage caused by wet
snow and by sleet in comparison to the control areas.
