Determination of Horizontal Distance in a Stand by a Vertical Angle Method

Summary

A new method is described for measuring distances in a stand. It is based on
measuring the vertical deflection of sighting to a desired point and deflection of
the terrain, with known height of a transitman. Data on the value of each individual
deflection of the terrain can be substituted by data on the value of the
horizontal deflection from the direction of the greatest incline, if it is known.
Investigation of the method´s applicability revealed a series of practical problems
connected primarily with extreme vulnerability to errors, which work with the
existing instruments is necessarily burdened.

The application of this method for determination of surfaces and borderlines
of sample plots implies a reverse procedure — determination of a desired distance
in the field by sighting under the corresponding vertical angle. This procedure is
not burrdened by the problems formerly mentioned.
