In the article the satellites launched till now for earth exploring, the way of images obtaining and their transfer to the Earth are described. The emphasis was given to the satellites of the series LANDSAT (USA) and SPOT (France), whose imagery was found to be appropriet for vegetation studies, including forestry. The properties of the satellite images, the way of their processing, use and incorporation in GIS are elaborated. The present level of the use of satellite imagery in Croatia is stated and the recomendations for their implementation and use in Croatian forestry are given.
