Manner of Forest Management in Management Unit »Trakošćan«

Summary

According to Medvedović (1991), fir, as a specific species in stands that arc
managed by selection felling, is spread in northwestern part of Croatia, on Macelj,
Strahinčica, Trakošćan, Ravna gora, Ivančica and Medvednica.

Management unit »Trakošćan« is situated in the forest part of northwestern
part of Croatian Zagorje, 15 km north from Krapina.

The most wide spread plant community is a forest of Blechno abietetum boreale,
Horvat, occupying 94% of the area, with dominant ecological-management
type II-C-10. Average annual air temperature is 9,8 °C, average precipitation is

1.005 mm. Fir grows on 250—300 m height above sea-level.
The management unit occupies an area of 983,76 ha, growing stock is 245.831 m:!
or (deciduous species 58% and conifers 42%) and annual current income is 5.640 nr.

FirFir and beech forest have been differently managed in the last 40 years.
Because of its specifically, landscape, position and lake by the Trakošćan
castle, these forests had aesthetic and recreational significance way back in the
time of count Draskovic when even a management plan existed. The construction
of road through the central part of this unit towards the highway Zagreb—Maribor
provided greater access of visitors to these forests, particularly to the part around
the castle.
One part of these forests was categorized as wildlife rehire of natural forests
in 1961, in 1963 the unit was divided to strict and wider protection zone and in
1965 for the whole unit selection forest management was prescribed, which remained
till the present. Thus, the 1985 management plan prescribes the cut of

70.821 m3 in 1/1 half-period, which makes 26% more than the increment and in 1/2
half-period 121.563 m3 which makes 116% more than the increment.
Stands of this unit have a disbalanced structure regarding the number of
trees and volume of wood. These are mainly transitional forms, neither uneven-
aged nor even-aged. The question is how to manage the forests of this unit in the
future, taking into consideration: the biology of fir and conditions in which fir
is, utilization of observed possibility of natural regeneration (fir in particular),
aesthetic and recreational purpose of these forests, soil erosion control and securing
the production of high quality volume of wood. Having all this in mind, it is
necessary to: change the manner of management (on cca 80% of the area) from
evenaged to selection management, extract the protected parts, carry out medium
intensity felling adjusted to the stand structure and regeneration and, hence, to
support the aesthetic and recreational purpose of the forests of management unit
»Trakošćan«.
