SUMMARY: The openness offorests on the territory ofthe Republic of Croatia is expressed in m/hectare or km/1000 hectare. Such expression ofthe rate of openness provides a numerical Information, but it does not say anything about the actual open forest area i.e. about the efficiency of the constructed network offorest roads regarding a reduction ofthe average distance ofskidding. An about equal amount offorest roads in a certain forest area can provide significant1y different results regarding a reduction ofthe average distance ofattraction or even worse, the construction ofnew kUometres offorest roads does not reduce, very often, the distance ofskidding adequately. A relative openness is a value that provides a good insight into the areal arrangement of mostly forest fire-prevention roads, also offering a possibility offixing the open and unopened areas with the possibility ofselecting the most convenient alternative to the existingforestfire-prevention roads. Relative openness represents the relation behveen the open and total forest area expressed in a percentage ofthe selected optimum distance ofaccess to the forest area. |
