SUMMARY: The management methods and the results achieved in the forests of
the Medvednica Mountain are the topic of the paper. A particular attention has been
paid to the former forests of the city of Zagreb, now state forests. The results indicate
constant increase of the wood reserve in the course of the last 50 years, which refers
to all state forests managed by the forestry organization. In 1981, a western
22,826 ha area of the Medvednica was proclaimed a nature reserve.

Of the total area, 8,185 ha are managed by the Zagreb "Hrvatske Sume " enterprise.
The management results for the 10-year-periods between 1957 and 1996 are
presented in tables 7, 8, 9 and 10. The management method of active protection, as
applied on Medvednica in the last 60 years by forestry experts in collaboration with
the scientists of the Forestry Faculty of Zagreb University and the Forestry Institute,
has yielded top results. Thanks to this, the citizens of Zagreb and all Croatia
are able to use this mountain´s fine forests with diversity of trees and bushes and
other flora and fauna for their recreation and sports.

Key words: management, active protection, nature park, wood reserve, managementplan,
recreation.
