SUMMARY: In this paperauthor describes the basic elements ofan Information
system (IS). Also, he recognizes that theoretically an Information system
can exist without any computer at ali. Classical (European) Ten Years Forest
Management Plan had ali elements ofan IS.

Purpose ofan IS is to help the manager in answering the everlasting questions:
what?, where?, when?, how?...

Thanks to progressive development of computer technology, todav even by
words Information system (IS) one considers the computerized Information
system (CIS).

Every CIS has jive links: People, Procedures, Sojhvare, Hardware and
Data. The ejficiency ofa CIS depends ofweakest one (its good average means
nothing).

Author assesses that CIS ofpublic company "Hrvatske Sume " is only one
hefound in Croatian forestry at ali. Even byfact that it is only one it is also the
best one.

Croatian graduated engineers of forestrv, gathered on 102nd annual meeting
oftheir (only one) Forestry Society (Hrvatsko šumarsko društvo 1998),
concluded: Forestry of 21st century needs the intellectual, free, onset and
brave foresters entirely specialised in biology, ecologv and information sci

ence...
This way they confirmed that they were aware of the injormatics usejulness.
Based on allfacts above, author suggests the urgent establishment ofade

quate department oj applied injormatics aspart ofonly one Croatian national
forest institute: Šumarski institut Jastrebarsko.

Also, he suggests (ifnotyet done?) the introduction of applied injormatics
course ofstudy in only one Croatian national forest faculty: šumarski Fakultet
Zageb.
