SUMMARY: The paper proposes a method of determining ways of utilising
a part of the natural nutritional base by wild ruminants (mou/jflon - Ovis amnion
L.) in the forest of holm oak and flowering ash (Fraxino orni - Qucrcetum
ilicis H-ice (1956) 1958). It has been established that at the end of spring and
the beginning of summer wild ruminants browse predominantly on tree heath
(Erica arborea L.). At the density of 4 heads per 100 ha, or 8 heads per 1 ha of
felling area, wild ruminants did not inflict any economical or ecological damage.
In the mentioned period, the wildlife did not damage holm oak (Quercus
ilex L.). it was found that wild ruminants nibble off about 38% of the top shoot
of its diameter. With lateral shoots, the percentage of the nibbled part of shoot
decreases as the base diameter increases. Before the start of a more intensive
browsing period, 71 % of undamaged crack phillyrea shoots are left for
browsing since the majority of pasture plants are dry.

Key words: moufflon (Ovis amnion L.), preference ratio index, crack
phillyrea (Phillyrea latifolia L.) length of the nibbled part of a shoot, percentage
of the nibbled part of the shoot
