D. Ballian: USPIJEVANJE SITKANSKE SMREKE (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) U IUFRO POKUSU... Šumarski list br. 5-6. CXXV (2001). 249-261
ference between the provenance in both experimental surfaces, but also
between the experimental surfaces themselves.

The 3001 provenance proved best characteristic of middle growth on both
surfaces. In both experimental surfaces we had statistically significant difference
between the provenance, but also between the experimental surfaces.

The 3003 provenance had the best survival rate among the plants at the

first experimental surface, and in the second — the 3006 provenance. With
regard to this characteristic we did not get statistically significant results in
our experiments, but we had it between the experiments and it was significant
at the 1 % level.

The 3003 provenance for the characteristic of volume of the middle/grown
tree was the best in the first experiment, and in the second experiment it was
the 3001 provenance. In the first experiment we had statistically significant
difference between provenance whereas at the other experimental surface we
did not get statistically significant difference. Within the experiments we got
statistically significant difference.

Within the total volume per hectare, the best provenance at the first experimental
surface was 3003, and on the other, the 3001 provenance. The first
experimental surface had a statistically significant difference between provenance,
whereas the other did not. Between the experimental surfaces there
existed a statistically significant difference at the 1 % level.

The obtained high varieties in different sites in some provenance, particularly
provenance 3001, 3003 and 3006 at the first experimental surface
proved that the selection of best genotypes can be done on the basis of quality
phenotypes which show high success in growth and eventually make their
vegetative multiplication and growth at the appropriate habitat.

Ecological conditions which are present at the experimental surfaces/sites
are more suitable to Norway spruce, than they are for Sitka spruce, since
Norway spruce of the same age which can be found at the protected areas,
has a greater mid range and mid height.

On the basis of the experiments we can conclude that the provenance of
Sitka spruce has a weak adaptability to our ecological conditions and that
they did not justify the expectations at the age of 26 years. Further investigations
with the Sitka spruce should include other provenance.
