primarily owned by the State (82 %). State-owned forests and forest land are managed by the state enterprise "Croatian Forests"
Inc., Zagreb.

To explore the situation of women in the forestry sector, a research was carried out in three institutions: University of Zagre b.
Faculty of Forestry; Forest Research Institute, JastrebarsKo and "Croatian Forests" Inc., Zagreb. For these institutions the psentage
of employed qualified women (i.e. forestry engineers, Masters of Science and Doctors of Science in forestry) in 2000, their age
structure and posts were established. The questionnaire showed the status, obstacles and opportunities of women in Croatian forestry
as well as their participation in decision making.

M.Sc. or Ph.D.´s in forestry at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Forestry (Forestry Department), the Forest Research Inatite,
Jastrebarsko and the State Enterprise "Croatian Forests" Inc., Zagreb. An analysis was made of the jobs they obtained, currer0osts,
acquisition of additional qualifications, competitors, their family situation and opportunities in Croatian forestry.

The questionnaire contained 6 general questions and 24 statements to be answered with Yes No, I don´t know. The results
of the research are presented jointly for all the three institutions.

FiBsutii

The questionnaire was answered by 157 of 200 asked women (78.5 %). The general data include age. marital status and number
of children. Most of the employed women, 65.0 %, are between 31 and 40 years old. 61.8 % are married, 31.2 % are single. The
largest percent of women does not have children (37.0 %), 29.9 % have two children, and 22.3 % have one child.

81.5 % of women are satisfied to have chosen forestry as their profession, which is very positive. How many women there are in
lead positions in Croatian forestry is answered by the fact that 92.4 % of women have a man as their immediate superior, and th e
opinion of the women that there is not a proportionate number of women in lead positions (88.5 %). Only 3.8 % have improved
their professional knowledge abroad, and the same percentage is actively engaged in the cooperation with international forestry
institutions. 64.3 % of the women stated that they want to achieve a higher position at work. 13.4 % of women stated that their
family was an obstacle for their career advance and 10.8 % that their career advance was inhibited by their immediate superior. It
is interesting that 70.5 % of women stated that they would achieve a career much sooner if they were man. Most of the women
(83.3 %) have no communication problems with forest workers, 69.4 % do not work less on the field than their male colleagues,
and 81.5 % do not like office work more than field work. 83.9 % of women stated that forestry should not remain a profession
reserved primarily for man.
