In recent period foresters working in silver fir growing region will notice a growing number of "red" firs and this especially from early spring until mid summer. These periodic damages are connected with dry years and attack of specific fir bark beetles from the so called "curvidens" group. Damages are most seri- ous on southern and western slopes and especially if combined with shallow soils on limestone. They are easily distinguished from other possible agents by the rapid needle color change which moves from the top of the crown downwards. The most common bark beetle species according to our findings in Croatia is Pityokteines spinidens Reitt.
