Klepac (ur.), SUMMARY: Forests, a very important natural ecosystem, and forestry, a profession that deals with forests as a natural and economic resource, received full recognition in Europe during the formation of legal states. In Croatia, the beginning of organised forestry is believed to coincide with the establishment of the first forest administrations in Krasno, Oštarije and Petrova Gora (1765). This period is marked with Maria Theresa s Šumski red (Forest Order) (1769) published in the Croatian language, which not only represented forestry legislation but also the first textbook on forest management in Croatia. It should be pointed out that even prior to the above event there were extensive activities that focused on forests, particularly in the field of legislation. We shall list only the most important ones: In the course of the 13th century, the statutes of almost all south Croatian towns contained regulations on the preservation and protection of forests against devastation. In 1464, a forest service entitled Magistrat providure za drvo i šume was formed in Dalmatia, within which a reserve was founded for oakwood and a ban was imposed on clearing forests and keeping goats.
