them broke out between 10.00 and 18.00. Areas affected by fire per one ha are
between 0.01 to 135.6 ha. In this, the most significant years are 1994, 1998,
2000 and 2003. During these years, fires broke out on 86 % of the total area
affected by fire. There are no correlations between the time of breaking out,
the number of fires and the areas affected by fire. In the analysed period, in 55
fires, the total of 880 ha or 88 ha per year was affected by fire, which is about
16 ha per one fire. Out of the total surface area affected by fire, 651 ha belong
to Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests) and 229 ha are privately owned.

According to collected data, fires appeared in 7 forests, 21 management
units and 62 departments. According to the surface area affected by fires, the
forestry office Crikvenica suffered most, where 52 ha were affected by individual
fire or the total of 571.50 ha, i.e. 65 % of the total surface area. 98 % of
the total surface area affected by fires were affected by fires in the forestry
office Senj, Krasno and Crikvenica.

Regarding the height above the sea level up to 100 m, 30 % of areas were
affected by fires and between 500 and 800 m, 53 % of the total surface area
was affected by fire. In almost all cases these are ground level fires.

Causes of breaking out of fires were different, mostly unknown and the
same is with agents. Intentional setting fire to something has not been determined.
Most fires broke out on the land of Hrvatske šume. The employees of
Hrvatske šume reported 16 %, policemen 10 %, citizens and others 74 % of
fires. Mostly, spruce and pine cultures were on fire, than pastures and other
vegetation.

383 employees of Hrvatske šume participated in extinguishing of forests
fires, than 1440 members of volunteer fire department, 357 professional firemen
and 119 citizens, i.e. the total of 2299 people, which is 42 men per one
fire. In extinguishing fires, passenger cars, special vehicles and fire engines,
a helicopter and a canadair (fir-fighting planes) were used. The total of 380
vehicles were used or 7 vehicles per fire. 17030 hours were spent for the
whole work, i.e. 309 hours per fire and 19 hours per ha of the surface area.
Costs airs ing from the forest fires are 48,430,496 kn. The amount of damages
was not indicated for all fires. The annual average of damages is 4,843,049
kn, the average per fire is 880,554 kn and per ha 55,035 kn.

About 20 minutes on the average passed from the occurrence to the information
about the fire and 48 minutes till the start of its extinguishing. On the
average, fires were localised in 4.20 hours and extinguished in 10 hours.
