Svojom brojnošću i intenzivnom detritifagnom aktivnošću stonoge uvelike omogućuju cirkulaciju tvari i energije u našim prirodnim šumama, a time potpomažu stabilnost i potrajnost šume kao ekosustava. Centipedes and millipedes are especially important group of arthropods which are abundantly represented in our forest fauna. Bearing significant morphological and biological differences they share one common feature, large number of equally built body segments each of which bearing one or two pairs of legs (reaching several hundred legs, one North American species holding the record with 750 legs). What makes them crucially important within the fo rest community is their detritophagous feeding biology, while some are being true predators. Thanks to their numbers and high rates of decaying plant material turnover they play important role in the circulation of biomass and energy in our natural forest communities, ensuring the equilibrium and sustainability of a forest itself. They are susceptible to water loss and thrive in moist and shady places like leaf litter, mosses, decaying stumps and similar niches. Therefore, in order to sustain their populations, forest management has to be adapted towards protection and propagation of their microhabitats.
