Feromone Traps — Modern Biotechnical Method in Integrated Bark Beetle Management     pdf     HR     EN 27
Summary: Bark beetles play important role in various types of forest ecosystems. Though they are secondary in their capability to attack forest trees, when favourable conditions occur they can build massive outbreaks and cause significant damage. Croatian foresters have used all available 1PM measures including world-wide use of pheromones for monitoring and suppressing outbreaks of most important conifer bark beetle species. Explanation of chemical stimuli communication among bark beetles is given in this paper. Basic designs and most widely used pheromone traps in Croatia are funneltraps based on Bakke´s trap. Hollow rectangular traps (Theysohn) are sometimes also been used. Fundamental data on managing pheromone traps for three bark beetle species is given in a tabular way. Being species-specific in their activity, pheromone traps have certain drawbacks in forest protection measures because they trace only several nowadays important pests. This is why classical methods (trap log fellings) should not be abandoned but used together with modern pheromone techniques in future.
