The Analisis of Structure and Quality of the Natural Beech Saplings in Some Beech Forests in Bosnia and Herzegovina     pdf     HR     EN 627
Summary: In Bosnia and Herzegovina the beech partcipates in the high pure stands on the area of 389 000 ha, in the mixed high stands on the 562 000 hectars and in the beech coppices on the area of 351 000 hectars, entirely on the area of 1 302 000 hectars. Those forests are not tended, and the quality of the wood is not satisfiead, because the participation of the wood of less value is very high.Investigations of some authors showed that exist the possibilities to increase significantely the worth of beech forests and beech wood, by tending of forests from the youngest stage (sapling stage). On that way at the end of the productiun periood (cutting cycle) the worth of the wood could be increased 5-6 times compared with the untended forests (Schober, 1972).
Our irivestigations in some beech forests in the sapling stage showed:
1. That the number of saplings (height about 2 m.) varies from 64 000 to 103 000, mean 90 000 per hectar, and in the upper layer, where are the future trees, 34 000 saplings per hectar.
2. The mean height on the investigated plots varies from 1,23 to 2,70 m, and the height of the upper layer between 1,73 and 4,20 m.
3. The dimeter at stump-height (5 cm from soil level) varies from 12,9 mm to 18,2 mm (mean for all plots 16,5 mm). The diameter of the dominant layer varies from 17,5 to 28,9 mm.
4. The quality of the stems is very high, because the stems with straight and unforked in the upper layer varies from 49 % to 90 % (per plots).
5. The quality is also satisfied, because from 52 % to 82 % of stems in the upper layer have good formed crowns
6. The stems at the same time with straight stems and good formed crowns in the upper layer is also satisfied, because 42% to 79 % in the same time have good stem and crown.
7. The other investigated characteristics (insertion of branches, form of the crown, monopodiality of the top) promised that the future stand should be satisfied, if the tending would be taken in time and continued during the rotation time.
