Relative Openness of the Forest Area and its Use in the Construction of the Forest Fire Prevention Roads     pdf     HR     EN 19
Summary: The openness of forests on the territory of the Republic of Croatia is expressed in m/hectare or km/1000 hectare. Such expression of the rate of openness provides a numerical information, but it does not say anything about the actual open forest area i.e. about the efficiency of the constructed network of forest roads regarding a reduction of the average distance of skidding. An about equal amount of forest roads in a certain forest area can provide significantly different results regarding a reduction of the average distance of attraction or even worse, the construction of new kilometres of forest roads does not reduce, very often, the distance of skidding adequately. A relative openness is a value that provides a good insight into the areal arrangement of mostly forest fire-prevention roads, also offering a possibility of fixing the open and unopened areas with the possibility of selecting the most convenient alternative to the existing forest fire-prevention roads. Relative openness represents the relation between the open and total forest area expressed in a percentage of the selected optimum distance of access to the forest area.
