Problem of Skidding Timber in Croatian Lowland Forests     pdf     HR     EN 151
Summary: Difficult terrains of forest exploitation in the Republic of Croatia cannot be merely found in mountainous region of the Dinarids or the central and marginal Panonian highlands where terrain slopes and significant surface obstacles represent a complicating factor. Problems frequently arise at the exploitation of lowland forests in which the highgrade pedunculate oak predominates. Pedunculate oak forests grow in lowland flooded areas on deep running coherent soils which are almost throughout the year, particularly during the winter felling and skidding period exposed to the moistening of

flood, precipitation or ground water. With the absence of strong winters which has become quite regular in the past few years, the before mentioned moistened soils become a limiting factor at the application of standard machinery equipment.

Skidders, forwarders and recently introduced mobile cable cranes are frequently used for skidding round timber in seed and final felling Croatian lowland forests.

In order to protect soil at final felling of oak, skidders and forwarders are used in convenient ground strength conditions. On the contrary, mobile cable cranes are used.

This paper presents research results obtained by measurements at the LKT 81 skidder, the VKS 9041 forwarder and the STEYR KSK 16 mobile cable crane on skidding pedunculate oak round timber. With respect to tree dimensions at final felling the wood assortment method has been mainly used.
