development of computerized information system in Croatian forestry     pdf     HR     EN 329
Summary: In this paper author describes the basic elements of an information system (IS). Also, he recognizes that theoretically an information system can exist without any computer at all. Classical (European) Ten Years Forest Management Plan had all elements of an IS.Purpose of an IS is to help the manager in answering the everlasting questions: what?, where?, when?, how?…
Thanks to progressive development of computer technology, today even by words information system (IS) one considers the computerized information system (CIS).
Every CIS has five links: People, Procedures, Software, Hardware and Data. The efficiency of a CIS depends of weakest one (its good average means nothing).
Author assesses that CIS of public company "Hrvatske Sume" is only one he found in Croatian forestry at all. Even by fact that it is only one it is also the best one.
Croatian graduated engineers of forestry, gathered on 102nd annual meeting of their (only one) Forestry Society (Hrvatsko šumarsko društvo 1998), concluded: Forestry of 21st century needs the intellectual, free, onset and brave foresters entirely specialised in biology, ecology and information science…
This way they confirmed that they were aware of the informatics usefulness.
Based on all facts above, author suggests the urgent establishment of adequate department of applied informatics as part of only one Croatian national forest institute: Šumarski institut Jastrebarsko.
Also, he suggests (if not yet done?) the introduction of applied informatics course of study in only one Croatian national forest faculty: šumarski Fakultet Zageb.

Key words: information system; computerized information system
