Afforestation, Tending and Regeneration as the Basic Prerequisite for Ecological, Social and Economic Development of the Mediterranean     pdf     HR     EN 463
Summary: Great economic and other potentials of the Mediterranean should encourage forest production. Any step forward toward progressive succession of forest vegetation, i.e. toward higher silvicultural forms, is a contribution to the environmental, social, and economic progress. To achieve stability and induce progressive successive processes in the Mediterranean forests, it is necessary to investigate the procedures in all silvicultural forms and degradation phases. The paper presents the principles of the silvicultural procedures in the Mediterranean forests. The activities consist of raising forests on naked karst (afforestation), care and conversion of stands into higher silvicultural forms, as well as the natural or artificial regeneration of mature stands. Afforestation planning encompasses the following criteria: choice of the most suitable surfaces for afforestation; choice of the suitable tree species for afforestation; determination of afforestation methods; timing; soil preparation; deciding on the distribution and distances among the plants and seed quantity per area unit; caring for the raised cultures. Mediterranean forests should be tended according to the stand forms, silvicultural forms, degradation phases, and habitat properties. The most useful operations to be done are cleaning, thinning and adding new plants. Aimed at gradual return of the autochthonous Mediterranean vegetation, stand regeneration should be done with regeneration felling, natural and/or artificial methods.
